Back Porch Ticket

[Verse 1]
He came in from the county line
With mud on his boots and a note in his hand
Said, “Mama’s gone, and the fields went dry
I’m just here to do what I can”
He set that note on the counter edge
By a jar of beans and a cracked blue plate
Then he looked at me with those tired eyes
